The Cypress tree grows tall and straight in many regions of the world. It is known to be one of the most long lived of any plant. Trees exist today that may be over two thousand years old. Cypress essential oil is steam distilled from the twigs of the tree, and should be an important part of any therapeutic collection of essential oils.

Cypress essential oil contains the chemicals cedrol, sabinol, terpenyl acetate, camphene, limonene, myrcene, pinene, and sabinene. These chemicals give Cypress essential oil its properties of being anti-infectious, antibacterial, antispasmodic, and astringent.

Preventing and calming spasms means that Cypress essential oil is very good at relieving menstrual cramps, stopping coughs, and soothing muscle spasms. It has even been used in cases of whooping cough as it also stimulates the immune system.

Diluted into a massage oil, Cypress stimulates the circulation of both blood and lymph. It is especially useful for varicose veins, cellulitis, and tired, swollen feet. It can be used on the feet and legs of pregnant women for their swelling symptoms (after the first trimester). Cypress can help with water retention, and mixed with Clary Sage, can ease many of the manifestations of menopause, including hot flashes.

As an astringent, Cypress actually reduces sebum production. It can be mixed into a shampoo for oily hair and/or dandruff, and can be an ingredient in a facial oil to help balance oily skin. Cypress reduces all sorts of secretions. It can be massaged on the belly to reduce heavy menstruation. It can be put into a bath salt to relieve hemorrhoids.

Emotionally, Cypress is a rock on which to lean. It helps us concentrate when we are feeling scattered. It comforts us when we are grieving; easing sobbing fits. In fact, Cypress has an association with death. It used to be planted in cemeteries for its association with long life and the immortality of the soul. Cypress is like a patient and encouraging listener. It is quiet and still; allowing us to experience our transitions naturally. Cypress essential oil is an excellent choice for dealing with loss. It helps us to let go of regret, indecision, and fear, allowing us to speak up for ourselves and move on. It helps us to develop wisdom and focus.

Cypress should not be used on people with high blood pressure or mixed with Helichrysum or Oregano.

Always dilute your essential oils in an unscented carrier oil like Sesame or Jojoba. Do not take essential oils internally. Always store essential oils out of heat and sunlight. Keep essential oils away from children and pregnant women.
